Chris Hedges on the Dangerous Illusions of Empire, American Democracy & Why There Will Never be a ‘Hedges.com’

Daily Call (1/8/12)

There is simply no journalist out there with a better grasp of the situation confronting Americans than former New York Times war correspondent Chris Hedges.

Fired by the Times for his outspoken opposition to the Cheney-Bush War on Iraq (at the very moment Times reporter Judith Miller was doing virtual PR work for the whole bloody, brutal lying enterprise) Hedges has gone on to write a series of amazing books, including one of my favorites: “Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle”. That title alone provides the perfect summation of where we are at and why.

Because of two decades of work reporting from war zones and revolutions from Romania to Sarajevo to Iraq, Hedges has had a unique opportunity to view what happens as empires crumble and societies lose their moral center and corrupt political systems fall into chaos. He is able to tie the loose ends together to provide an overall narrative to our present state.

In this 3-hour interview Hedges talks with deep insight, broad knowledge and compassionate awareness about a variety of subjects from the end of the American military empire, the soulless cannibalism of unregulated capitalism, labor and worker rights, the failure of the liberal class, the future of the planet and  much more.

I watched the entire interview over several days and found the whole thing fascinating and perceptive. It is well worth the time.
The online title for this is interview is “Brace Yourself! The American Empire Is Over & The Descent Is Going To Be Horrifying”, but that is too narrow a title that does give an accurate sense of the full scope of this interview.

This is a fast loading video, so it was easy to watch in parts as my schedule allowed through the week.
