Purpose: With the recommendation of the Department of Natural Resources, the state Natural Resources Board directed the DNR to conduct a strategic analysis of frac sand mining in Wisconsin. Citizen input on what the comprehensive study of the health and environmental impacts of silica sand mining is welcome in the first phase of the study.

The public is encouraged to attend public meetings in February and March to share their questions and concerns about frac sand mining activities. These comments will help shape the scope of what the study may include. Written comments are also welcome.

Let the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources know what information you and your community need to address the impacts of frac sand mining, processing and transportation.

Citizens have an opportunity to provide comments to the DNR on the issues the agency will study in completing a strategic analysis of frac sand mining. In January, the Natural Resources Board voted unanimously to direct the DNR to honor the request made in the citizen-led petition asking for a strategic analysis of silica sand mining activities.

After the DNR compiles a draft of the study, the public will have another chance to comment. At that time, probably early 2016, you will have a chance to give more feedback before the study is complete, but in the coming weeks you’ll have a chance to tell the DNR what you want the study to include before they begin.

You are welcome and invited to come to one of the public meetings listed above to make comments that will be accepted by the DNR and used to decide on the scope of the strategic analysis. You don’t need to stay the whole time, you can come in to provide your comments in writing or in verbal testimony if you chose, then you can head back home. More public meetings may be announced soon as well as ways to share your ideas online.
